P0000 OBD Fault Code: No DTCs Detected (Causes & Fixes)

Not many OBD reading devices display the P0000 fault code. It can mean that no fault codes have been detected, usually it indicates scanner tool incompatibility and may be concealing another fault code underneath.


If a DTC is associated to the powertrain, an OBD scanner will read it as starting with P, thus the letter "P." Generic fault codes are those of the format P0xxx.

The Meaning of a P0000 Fault Code

Your dashboard's malfunction indicator lamp (MIL), also known as the check-engine light, will glow when the vehicles computer detects a problem.


Most cars put their engines in open loop mode, sometimes referred to as "limp mode".


The DTCs (diagnostic problem codes) stored in the ECU memory must be recovered using an OBD scan tool in order to restore proper powertrain operation.


An ECU may have 10,000 DTC P-codes in its system memory, so knowing a specific DTC to point you in the right direction eliminates a lot of the guesswork involved in identifying your vehicle's problems.

Possible Causes

A P0000 error code is typically caused by using an inadequate OBD scanner. It can be caused for the following reasons.


  • using an OBD scan device that is less expensive or less competent.

  • using a scanning device that doesn't function with your car

  • using a multipurpose scanner


In some cases, the P0000 code may act as a generic code in place of a fault code that is specific to a particular vehicle. As a precaution, it is essential to have the car tested by an OBD scanning tool that is compatible.


Signs & Symptoms

If there are no other underlying fault codes responsible for this fault code, there might not be any functional or drivability concerns with this DTC.


However, there can be signs of the fundamental problem if there is a fault code that the OBD scanner is missing and it is being replaced by the P0000 code.


Since the majority of significant DTCs are generic and detected by practically any OBD scanner, it should be safe to continue driving normally if there are no immediately obvious problems with the code.


Possible Fixes

The best way to fix this code is to be sure what it actually is by using a professional scan tool.


Most commonly your OBD scan tool is defaulting to the P0000 code if your MIL (malfunction indicator light) is not lit and your car is running normally.


However, if the MIL is lit or you are experiencing drivability issues, the scan tool you are using is not compatible with your car and another code may be hidden underneath.


Numerous generic OBD scanners may miss some of the hundreds of additional manufacturer-specific DTCs, which might result in the P0000 code being used instead of the actual fault code.


The motor/battery controller in electric or hybrid vehicles, for example, is simply not designed to be handled by some scan equipment.


It's probably a default code if the car isn't encountering any problems, use a professional OBD scanner to be sure. Sometimes a straightforward software update might resolve the problem.
